Good morning and welcome to the Freedom New Mexico Monday briefing.

MLK Day

There are celebrations and commemorations galore today to mark Martin Luther King Day.

In Clovis, the annual walk to commemorate King’s march from Selma to Montgomery gets started at 9 a.m. in Potter Park.

In Portales, a similar march starts at 10 a.m. at Eastern New Mexico University and ends up at the Memorial Building.

It’s a fact

Martin Luther King Jr. skipped the 9th and 12th grades in school and entered Moorehouse College at age 15.

Meetings Watch

Portales City Council meets 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall.

It’s open to the public.

Kitchen tip

When making pie, sprinkle the sugar under the fruit instead of on top. This prevents pie from boiling over.

Today in history

The 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, prohibiting the “manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors for beverage purposes,” is ratified on this day in 1919 and becomes the law of the land.
